Old Goodwood Crime Prevention and Improvement District

Safety and crime prevention within our area has always been the foremost concern of our association. The current financial burden and other challenges Baton Rouge is facing may affect neighborhood issues and our PPP protection. It is time to look at the potential impact on Goodwood Property Owners Association (GPOA) and Old Goodwood.  To mitigate the burden faced by our neighborhood, we must implement measures to provide a more frequent police presence within the Goodwood area.

The GPOA Board recognizing this, has endorsed the concept of presenting Crime District legislation to address this priority issue. The proposed CPID legislation creates an avenue for further community involvement as well as improvements within the GPOA boundaries. GPOA would join all the adjacent neighborhood associations, who have already elected for such status, and would benefit from their baseline of experience, further protecting and insulating the Goodwood area from encroaching criminal activity. State of Louisiana legislative passage and the successful vote of the people residing in the district will be needed to enact a parcel fee that is similar to what our PPP members have been paying. After much review, we believe we can double the hours of police patrol, implement technology and provide for other civic improvements in our neighborhood. Provisions are in place to “exempt” qualified households that have fixed incomes where increased taxes would be a burden.

House Resolution 313, from last year’s Legislative Session, recorded the boundaries for Goodwood Property Owners Association and established the GPOA geographical area. This is the area that would be included in any vote on such a crime district. The funds generated from an Independent Crime and Improvement District could be applied to increased police presence, electronic crime deterrent measures, and enhanced improvements of the area.

Please be aware of our communications and meetings to learn of the Crime District Legislation and contact Board members to discuss this important step to maintain safety, security and the integrity of the neighborhood.

The safety committee was created out of the need to provide more information and security for the residents of Old Goodwood. As crime statistic and issues began to creep into the area, the committee committed to managing a system to insure a heighten police presence in the area, through contracts with off-duty police officers, creating the Private Police Patrol.

Now, with the proposal of the Old Goodwood Crime Prevention and Improvement District, we are looking for volunteers for the committee to help accomplish the task of promoting, educating the general public and helping guide this concept to completion.

Please participate in the Private Police Patrol!

Please join, if you are not already a PPP member, and share this information with your neighbors. The $150 annual PPP household membership supports the police contract and the services described. PPP members also receive a yard sign to show their support of the program, and warn criminals of their vigilance. Additionally, GPOA Safety committee membership is open to any interested PPP member. We need everyone’s support to continue the patrol, and as membership increases we will be able to expand the hours and days of coverage. Let’s establish a reputation for Goodwood with our patrol and our vigilance that says we are a bad choice for crime.

Please Report All Crime and Suspicious Activity!

Our greatest strength for increasing safety within the neighborhood is our own vigilance. We ask that all residents report any crime or suspicious activity to both the police and the safety committee. To contact the police call 911 for emergencies or 389-2000 for non-emergency situations and file an official police report. To contact PPP, please email ppp@brgoodwood.com    with any information you have available. Regular reports are emailed to PPP members addressing local crime statistic and updates on activities.

Another service of the PPP is to offer additional patrol and vacation checks by the police. This service has been appreciated by many of the members and helps reduce some of the concern associated with being away from your home. If you are going out of town, use the online form. It is important to submit this information at least 48 hours in advance to let help with the patrol schedule.
