GPOA Member Dennis Vidrine presents the plan to Field Trip Participants - June 9, 2026

A coalition of partners including Clean Pelican, the City of Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Green, Carbo Landscape Architects, and Groundworks Landscaping met on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, to discuss improvements to the medians along Government Street. The Goodwood Property Owners Association (GPOA) is also playing a key role in community engagement for this effort.

This $10,000 demonstration project will be implemented at the corner of Jefferson Highway and Government Street. It is designed not only to enhance this highly visible intersection, but to serve as a model for a larger $300,000 investment pledged by Metro Council Members Laurie Adams, Twahna Harris, and Carolyn Coleman. If successful, this approach has the potential to be extended along the entire Government Street corridor, creating a lasting and transformative improvement for the community.

As many Goodwood residents recognize, the State-funded Government Street road diet project—particularly the median landscaping—has not performed well under Baton Rouge’s environmental conditions and has fallen short of expectations. This project represents an exciting opportunity to demonstrate a more resilient, sustainable, and visually appealing solution.

With jurisdiction over Government Street, the City has engaged Groundworks Landscaping, whose expertise—along with input from Clean Pelican, Baton Rouge Green, and Carbo Landscape Architects—has been instrumental in developing a stronger planting plan. Due to the project’s location, GPOA has been asked to lead outreach, gather community feedback, and coordinate volunteers for the installation scheduled on June 20, 2026.

The GPOA is asking members to support this effort in the following ways:
  • Review the landscape plan prepared by Carbo Landscape Architects (link provided).
  • Volunteer for planting day on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon by completing the above form or by emailing your name, email address, and phone number to info@brgoodwood.com.
  • If you are unable to volunteer, consider serving as a neighborhood ambassador by becoming familiar with the project and sharing information with others.

These field trips are designed to present the project and outline expectations for success. While this is a small “demonstration project,” it is powerfully designed—featuring more than 1,000 native plant plugs and improvements to the existing irrigation system—to showcase what is possible when the right plants and approach are used.

With enough volunteers, the installation will be fast, engaging, and rewarding. More importantly, this effort offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to a visible, meaningful improvement in our neighborhood—one that could shape the future look and function of Government Street for years to come.

We encourage you to be part of this exciting effort and help make a lasting difference.
